Review and Giveaway: Old El Paso (Closed)

 *Giveaway Has Ended*

by Trish Deitemyer

My family loves tacos; in fact, taco dinner is in our weekly rotation.  So when I was offered a chance to review Old El Paso’s family taco night, I said, ¡Sí, por favor!”

I was sent a packet of Old El Paso seasoning mix, an adorable cactus-shaped chip and dip dish and 3 chili pepper-shaped dishes.  They also gave me a $10 gift card to buy all the other taco night necessary ingredients.  I picked up some ground turkey, taco shells, tomatoes, lettuce, sour cream and shredded Colby-jack cheese and went to town!

Old El Paso taco night was a huge hit at my house.  It was super easy and quick to make and, most importantly for me, gluten free.  Lots of other seasoning mixes have some form of gluten in them; I was very happy to see that Old El Paso Taco Seasoning did not.  So I was able to enjoy the meal and the evening afterwards! ;)  Old El Paso will definitely be my go-to taco seasoning mix from now on.  ¡Muy delicioso!

Mirror, Mirror On the Wall...What Does Your Image Say About You?

Like this? Then share it with your friends!

A mirror, reflecting a vase
I know we'd all like to believe that what we look like doesn't matter. But, would you go on a job interview in pajamas? Not unless you were showing off your style for a pajama manufacturer. We're all so caught up in the anti-stereotype and anti-profiling hype, that we've forgotten that what we show everyone on the outside reflects who we were on the inside.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not talking about beauty. I certainly believe that true beauty comes from the inside. What I'm talking about is the impression you give the world when you leave your house every day. It's not about what kind of car you drive, or how expensive your clothes are, it's about dressing appropriately for the situation. It's not about the hairstyle you have, it's the fact that you respect yourself and others to actually brush your hair! How you act, how you dress, style your hair...those things tell a lot about who you are inside.

This is especially true if you have a lot of interaction with other people in your everyday life. Remember the question I asked earlier...would you go to an interview in your pajamas? About six months ago, I interviewed a woman who showed up at Starbucks in pajama pants. I'm not sure why she thought it was OK to come to an interview dressed that way, but what kind of impression was she trying to give? The "I-don't-care-what-you-think" impression? But you should care. Why would I recommend someone to my company that "doesn't care"? If she doesn't care about what I think, will she care about performing well in her job duties? Probably not. That attitude cost her a high paying position.

So I ask you, when you leave the house, are you putting your best foot forward? Or are trying to make a point that won't be well received? Make sure you show who you REALLY are inside, caring, thoughtful, strong, confident, hard-working, and most of all beautiful inside and out!

Gorgeous Galison Planner is Getting My Act Together
By
Trish Deitemyer

One of my recurring New Year’s resolutions is to get organized. (I guess it hasn’t happened yet, since I keep adding it to my resolution list, year after year…) Besides organizing my home, handbag and sock drawer, I’ve decided I need to get mealtimes in order, too. I usually do my weekly grocery shopping on Sunday nights, but, more often than not, by Wednesday, we’re mysteriously out of food. This in turn causes either an annoying extra grocery store trip or, even more costly and unhealthy, fast food (shudder!) When I received my beautiful Origami Lane Weekly Organizer from Galison, DD thought it would be great for organizing dinners. Brilliant!!! I use my planner to write out each dinner for the week, then write my list on the enclosed note pad. Any extra reminders get jotted down on the cute little stickie notes. There’s a super handy accordion-style envelope attached, where I can stash coupons or receipts.

I take my organizer with me when I go shopping, and it really helps me stay on track (and on budget!) Now, if this was a normal notebook or boring black planner, I might feel a little nerdy, but not with my adorable flower print Galison planner perched prettily on my cart.

Galison has so many, many great stationery items; you’ll have a hard time choosing just one! They are quality pieces; no cheapy dollar store notepads here. Besides planners and notes, you’ll find recipes boxes and binders, puzzles, stickers, address and phone books, calendars, journals and notepads of every size and shape. I counted over 50 different collections, but there are probably lots more. Many are illustrated with graphics or drawings, but some are graced with art from Andy Warhol, Renoir, Georgia O’Keeffe, Monet and William Morris. Galison products make great gifts, but you may find it very hard to part with them. But you deserve a present, right? After all, you’ve been working hard on those resolutions!

Help in the Kitchen: Claire Robinson’s 5 Ingredient Fix

by Trish Deitemyer

I admit it: I'm a Food Network junkie.  I don't really know why, either; I'm not a big fan of cooking and I'm a picky eater.  It's really quite odd.  One of my favorite shows is Claire Robinson's “5 Ingredient Fix.”  Claire is someone I'd like to be friends with.  She's cool, smart and funny.  She doesn't make you feel bad about any lack of skill in the kitchen; in fact, she's always offering helpful little shortcuts and tips.

I was very excited to check out her first book 5 Ingredient Fix: Easy, Elegant, and Irresistible Recipes (Grand Central Lifestyle; Oct. 2010; 29.99 US/33.99 CAN)  This is a beautiful hard-bound cookbook.  Each recipe page has the five (or less) ingredients needed printed across the top and most are accompanied by a gorgeous color photograph.  Each recipe also has 2 extra paragraphs: "What makes this recipe really sing" where Claire explains the ingredients and tells you how to get the best out of them; and "What to toss in if you have it" which tells you, well...exactly that!  For instance, if you have some, add hot sauce to the buttermilk marinade on the Buttermilk Pecan Chicken or lemon zest to the pecan and panko breading.  Believe me, these recipes are pretty easy and they’ll have you feeling like a Food Network chef from the first bite.

There are far too many great recipes to list, but here are a few of my family's favorites:

  • Pumpkin Seed Dried-Cherry Trail Mix
  • Maple Candied Bacon
  •  Espresso Martinis
  • Ginger and Lemon Roasted Chicken with Braised Fennel
  • Creamy Grilled Corn Soup
  • Millionaire's Shortbread (mmm....)

If you're short on time (who isn't?) and not in love with endless trips to the grocery store, check out Claire Robinson's 5 Ingredient Fix.  You may find that you have the makings of a delicious, Food-Network-worthy meal right in your pantry!

Disclosure: I received a free product for this review. No monetary compensation was offered or accepted for this post. The opinions above are my own. Others’ experience may vary.

Review and Giveaway: SoftLips Lip Care (Closed)

*Giveaway Has Ended*

by Julie Kieras

Every winter, I feel like my lips get torn up by the snow plow! I am always licking my lips because they get dry and peely from the cold and wind. But of course, that just makes them more peely! Sometimes I would sit through church and couldn’t even concentrate because my chapped lips hurt so bad! And it’s not like you can lean over at church or the movies and say, “Hey, can I borrow some lip moisturizer?” the way you can ask for a piece of gum or tissue! No, you need to get your own! Chapped lips not exactly attractive either, so I needed serious help! SoftLips came to my rescue this winter with several products that solved my lip dilemma.

First, I used SoftLips Replenish to nourish my cracked skin – it went on so smoothly and with a light, fruity scent from the Acai Berry and Cranberry Seed Oils. I love the natural oils in this product. I also tried the Cherry flavor – which I was surprised to like because I don’t usually like Cherry, but this scent was very light, so I enjoyed it. The great part about most of the SoftLips products is they go on clear, so you can keep your lips covered in rich emollient all day without having to check a mirror to see if you messed up and smeared yourself with color.

My favorite SoftLips product I tried out had to be the SoftLips Sheer Iridescent – it still goes on clear, but with a shimmery effect that I love – I felt a sparkle in my step (and no more painful lip-licking) as I ran out in the cold weather to do some errands! The Sheer Iridescent would be great if you had a little girl who wanted to use “makeup” because it’s still clear but will add a touch of shine!

If you want to give SoftLips to the man in your life (men need skincare too!), not to worry – the SoftLips Beeswax lip conditioner packaging is gender neutral and has a cool mint flavor, so even guys will enjoy putting it on! And the Beeswax lip treatment is free of parabens, hydrocarbons, and harsh chemicals – you’ll be able to read the entire ingredient list! With several natural oils and Vitamin E, SoftLips Beeswax lip conditioner is a great item for the entire family!

It’s easy to forget that winter sun can still damage the thin skin on your lips and cause sunburn. The SPF20 in most SoftLips products gives a layer of protection, especially good for winter outdoor enthusiasts – or when I just want to take my baby outside to play in the snow. I am definitely stashing a tube of SoftLips in every purse and coat pocket this winter… and of course, not going to forget it in the summer time either when the sun really heats things up!
