Baby Photo Taking Tips

Since I received such great suggestions how to take beautiful pictures of your little ones I thought I would create a post to share with everyone.

Here are suggestions from some of my readers that entered the Shutter Buddy contest on how to take great photos of your baby:

1. Use a bell….I will ring it and she will look towards the bell…then I snap the pic. -Shelly

2. Get down at their level! I often lay on the floor on my stomach to photograph our grandson! -Some Lucky Dog

3. Always put what your taking a scenic photo of in front of the view eg like a spruce tree branch in front of a mountain etc. -D.Calvert

4. Experiment with homemade filters. I have been playing with shooting through colored cling wrap. It can make for some cool effects! – Heather!

5. My favourite technique is to just hold down the button, the camera I have takes pictures at about 2 seconds intervals and after doing all I can to get a smile I have roughly 100 photos to sift through but almost guaranteed to have a decent one! ๐Ÿ™‚ – Perfect Blue Moon

6. I make a loud noise, like rolling my tongue, that’s how I get my little one to look at me! -Mom of two!

7. We always use 2 adults – one is behind the lens taking pictures and the other one is holding new toys over the photographer’s head or using a scarf to play peekaboo –that last one worked for our Christmas photos last year, got two great big smiles! ๐Ÿ™‚ -Lisa

8. My best photo taking technique is to allow my husband to take the pictures! He’s fantastic! This is something I’m sure he would love to have. It looks like a miracle worker at getting the baby to look in the right direction. -Jennifer

9. I always take a photo at my sons level..so i don’t just get pics of the top of his head.
-jakiesmom

10. Car keys…shake them like crazy and hope that you can catch the attention of the kiddo!
-susan

11. For actual “shoots,” we make sure she’s well rested, fed, and happy. We try to limit the items on her person that might be distracting and make sure we have a special toy she hasn’t seen in awhile or some cheerios to help her along during. -kuparstwn

12. Mine is a peek-a-boo trick that I use to get her attention and smile when I click her picture! Works like a charm! -Sheryl

13. I hold my breath before clicking the shutter. That reduces movement and results in clearer pictures. -Beth

14. I usually call my son’s name or wave toys at him to get his attention when I take photos. -tylerpants

15. I usually say something silly to make her smile naturally! -trixx

I would love to hear more suggestions! Feel free to share your tried and true tips.
